Though Hannover is a quite small city with its 520.000 inhabitants, there are some interesting things to discover, especially in summer! Next to the benefit for language learners that the city represents the most pure and dialect-free German, it offers also beautiful nature spots, a lot of different open air events and interesting outdoor activities, which are most enjoyable in summer.
Here are some of the places and events that are definitely worth to explore:
With an audience of round about 25.000 people, the Plaza Festival is one of the biggest festivals in the north of Germany. It takes place every year in the end of May and presents several internationally famous musicians as well as the top artists of Germany in a terrific atmosphere.
Firework competition in Herrenhausen Gardens
Some of the best firework artists from all over the world are competing against each other on five summer nights from May to September, supported by some live music and walking acts. The events take place in Herrenhäuser Gärten which is one of the most impressive Baroque gardens in Europe.
One of Hannover’s highlights in August is the Maschseefest, a festival at the biggest lake in the city. For 19 days it offers plenty of different musical performances, cabaret, sport activities on the lake, culinary delights and firework shows.
It is even possible to get a real holiday feeling at the sea when you are in Hannover. Due to the good railway connection there is always the opportunity to make a trip to the North Sea which takes about 3 hours. In addition, the beautiful port city Hamburg can be explored on the way.
If you don’t have too much time, the largest lake of northwestern Germany can be reached within one hour from Hannover by train.
As one of Europe's largest inner-city forest areas, the Eilenriede is also known as “the green lung”. It offers plenty of activities to do such as hiking, horseback riding, skating, mini golf and much more. You can also just have a nice walk and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful alder trees as it is a nice change to the city life. In the end of June, you find thousands of fireflies on the paths which turn the forest into a magical natural spectacle.
